Liu has a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from College of Pharmacy, University of South Carolina in 2012. She received her Ph.D training from her advisor Dr. Campbell McInness in the drug design and synthesis lab. Liu's dissertation is entitled design of non-ATP competitive and cell cycle specific CDK inhibitors targeting cyclin binding groove.

She also has a B.S. in biological sciences from University of Science and Technology of China in 2005. Her college research work was about transdermal drug delivery.
